NORFOLK, Va. — The Norfolk Southern Foundation is providing $830,000 to assist communities along its lines in Louisiana, Alabama and Mississippi that face long-term recovery efforts due to Hurricane Katrina.

“With the start of this hurricane season, many of the communities Norfolk Southern serves are still struggling to recover from the last one. We hope these funds will hasten a full recovery and help these communities become better prepared to weather future storms,” said Norfolk Southern Chief Executive Officer Wick Moorman.

Norfolk Southern has more than 1,800 employees who live and work in the Gulf Coast states affected by the hurricane.

The donation is the second part of an NS assistance program to support community economic development efforts, environmental clean-up and rebuilding of houses, schools and other infrastructure.
