NORFOLK, Va. — Norfolk Southern Corp. named a Hattiesburg native as president and realigned the jobs of six senior executives Tuesday as the railroad prepares for the retirement of chief executive David R. Goode in 2006.

Charles W. Moorman, senior vice president-corporate planning and services, was promoted to president and will be responsible for running the railroad’s day-to-day operations, a spokesman said.

Goode has held the title of president in addition to chairman and chief executive officer since 1992.

The Norfolk Southern chief executive will reach the mandatory retirement age of 65 in January 2006, railroad spokesman Bob Fort said, adding that Norfolk Southern’s board will name Goode’s successor then.

Moorman, 52, a native of Hattiesburg, joined Norfolk Southern in 1970 and has held senior positions in the corporation’s transportation, personnel, labor relations, information technology and strategic planning areas.
