A review of safety data by NBC News showed that from 2018 to 2022, Norfolk Southern averaged 0.88 accidents per million miles, which is slightly above the average of the country’s six other Class-I freight railroads over the same period. By contrast, from 2003 to 2007, the other six train companies averaged 2.26 accidents per million miles, while Norfolk Southern boasted a low of 0.96.
