The Association of American Railroads (AAR) now has 32 weeks of traffic data for 2022 (ending Aug. 13). Total North American carload and intermodal traffic dipped 2.9% from the same point last year—with decreases in the U.S. and Canada, and an increase in Mexico. North American rail volume for the first 32 weeks of this year (ending Aug. 13) on 12 reporting U.S., Canadian and Mexican railroads came in at 21,607,752 carloads and intermodal containers and trailers. This is the second consecutive week that total traffic has declined. Week 30, which ended July 30, 2022, posted a total traffic gain—the first time a gain has been reported since Week 7, which ended Feb. 17, 2022.
