HALIFAX — Nova Scotia regulators will hold a public hearing on planned cuts to rail service in Cape Breton, the Canadian Press reports.

The Utility and Review Board is considering an application from the Cape Breton and Central Nova Scotia Railway, which wants to end its service between St. Peter’s Junction, N.S., and Sydney, N.S.

The railway says traffic on the line has plummeted since Cape Breton’s coal mines and steel mill were shut down.

Some businesses and politicians in the Sydney area have spoken out against the plan, saying the freight service is vital to the area’s economy.

The review board hearing is set for May 29 in Sydney.
