BALDWIN, Pa. — A Norfolk Southern freight train derailed Tuesday night after a landslide damaged the tracks it was traveling on near Pittsburgh, the Associated Press reported.
Allegheny County emergency management officials reported no injuries in the accident, which occurred around 9 p.m. along Carson Street in the borough of Baldwin, just east of Pittsburgh.
Emergency officials were concerned, however, that 5,000 gallons of diesel fuel in two locomotive engines could leak into the nearby Monongahela River, although they called that a “worst-case” scenario. Hazardous materials teams and emergency crews remained at the site later on Tuesday night, assessing the wreckage.
Norfolk Southern officials said dirt and debris fell from a hillside near the tracks, cluttering and damaging the tracks, and causing the accident.
