NORFOLK, Va. — A special train operated by Norfolk Southern Railway will stop in six southeastern cities Oct. 7-12 to promote Transportation Community Awareness and Emergency Response (TRANSCAER), a nationwide program to increase community understanding of the safe transportation of hazardous materials and the importance of emergency planning.

The 2002 TRANSCAER Whistle-Stop tour schedule is as follows:

Oct. 7 — Alexandria, Va. (NS Van Dorn Street Intermodal Terminal)
Oct. 8 — Spencer, N.C. (North Carolina Transportation Museum)
Oct. 9 — Asheville, N.C. (NS Office Building)
Oct. 10 — Knoxville, Tenn. (World’s Fair site)
Oct. 11 — Chattanooga, Tenn. (Chattanooga Choo Choo)
Oct. 12 — Decatur, Ala. (Rhodes Ferry Park)

At each location, state and local emergency planning committees, emergency responders and government officials can participate in hands-on drills and training sessions. Railroad training tank cars, specialized emergency response vehicles and over-the-road tank trucks will be on display.
