ROANOKE, Va. — Norfolk Southern Corp. put more than 40 Roanoke workers on leave Tuesday. Furloughs posted at Shaffer’s Crossing Locomotive Shop hit 20 electricians and 23 other positions, said Shannon Spotswood, a Vinton-based representative for the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers union. Spotswood estimated Tuesday’s cuts were the most significant at the locomotive facilities at 24th Street Northwest since the railroad laid off 60 car shop workers in 1999. Union members told him 13 machinists, 5 laborers and several other positions were impacted, he said.
