NORFOLK, Va. — Norfolk Southern Corporation has issued its 2001 Annual Report, printing 206,000 copies and posting it on the company Web site, the railroad announced in a press release.

A green track signal — which to railroaders represents clear tracks ahead — dominates the cover and the Web site. “That image conveys the state of your company today,” said David R. Goode, chairman, president and chief executive officer, in his letter to stockholders. “We are in good shape and moving ahead.”

The report describes improvements Norfolk Southern achieved in 2001. Even during a soft economy, Norfolk Southern put the finishing touches on the East’s most comprehensive intermodal transportation infrastructure, enhanced service and operating efficiency, and improved financial performance with a 37 percent increase in earnings per share.

“We showed ourselves and others that NS and its people are capable of responding quickly and aggressively and making the changes necessary to produce good returns for our investors,” Goode said. “We have a lot of work to do, but the way is now clear.”

Goode said 2002 goals include continued improvements in service, productivity, revenue growth, cash flow and returns for shareholders. “I believe 2002 and beyond will give NS people the chance to show what a well- tuned transportation operation with capacity, technology and skill can produce,” he said.

Norfolk Southern creates its annual report in-house and distributes it to stockholders, the financial community, news media and libraries.
