NORFOLK, Va. — Norfolk Southern is currently anticipating inclement weather affecting the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic coastal areas associated with Hurricane Matthew. Weather advisories have been issued based on Matthew’s forecasted track. Strong winds, heavy rainfall and potential flooding are expected in many coastal and low-lying areas. The state of South Carolina has ordered evacuations of coastal areas effective 3:00pm October 5th. Norfolk Southern is monitoring the storm closely and is taking precautions to protect employees, track, and shipments in these areas.

In preparation Engineering is staging resources, including ballast trains, equipment, and generators, and will be prepared to commence storm recovery efforts once it is safe to do so. Norfolk Southern will be working with customers in these areas to identify switching needs and service curtailment. Customers should expect delays to affected areas that could last several days. Customers with questions regarding local service should contact their Operations and Service Support, Unit Train, Automotive, or Intermodal representative.
