WASHINGTON, D.C. — Railroad Norfolk Southern Corp. spent nearly $1.7 million in the second quarter to lobby on rail infrastructure expansion, environmental matters and other issues, according to a recent disclosure report.

The Norfolk, Va.-based company also lobbied on legislation involving Amtrak, rail safety and security, and imposing limits on railroad liability for transporting hazardous chemicals.

The Association of American Railroads, the main trade group for the industry, has said it wants other transportation companies to take part of the financial responsibility in transporting toxic chemicals, such as chlorine.

Norfolk Southern lobbied Congress and the Surface Transportation Board, an economic regulatory agency affiliated with the Department of Transportation, in the April-June period, according to the report filed July 21 with the House clerk’s office.
