BUTLER, Ind. — Norfolk Southern officials are trying to figure out what caused a train to derail Thursday morning outside Butler.

The train was headed from Chicago to Binghamton, N.Y., when 10 of the 20 cars derailed shortly before 5:30 a.m. near U.S. 6 and DeKalb County Road 61, Norfolk Southern spokesman Rudy Husband said.

The train was loaded with truck trailers and overseas shipping containers. There were no injuries, and crews were still trying to determine why the train left the tracks and just how much damage the cars sustained, Husband said.

The wreck occurred in an area with two sets of train tracks. Crews had opened one set of tracks by 3 p.m. but were still working to clear the other. Husband said he did not know how many trains had to be routed around Butler as a result of the derailment.
