CARLISLE, Pa. — Norfolk Southern Railroad recruiters are in the Carlisle area today and Wednesday seeking applicants for conductor openings.

A press release says the railroad intends to fill nearly 70 jobs in the Carlisle-Harrisburg-York area. Most of the positions are in train service — conductors and eventually locomotive engineers.

Locally, the applications are being accepted today between 3 and 7 p.m. and Wednesday between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. at Holiday Inn Carlisle, 1450 Harrisburg Pike, Middlesex Township.

Applications also will be accepted at the Wyndham Harrisburg Hershey, 4650 Lindle Road, Harrisburg, between 3 and 7 p.m. Wednesday and between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. Thursday.

Railroad spokesmen say rail officials will invite “the best applicants” to interviews during the week of Sept. 6.

A press release from the Association of American Railroads says freight railroads are expected to hire more than 80,000 workers over the next six years because of the growing economy, sharp increases in business for railroads and retirements.

“With freight demand expected to jump 67 percent by 2020, the rail industry offers stability,” says AAR President and CEO Edward Hamberger in the release.

It goes on to say conductors are particularly in demand and earn an average of $67,128 a year.

The release says locomotive engineers earn an average of $75,162, peaking at about $110,000.
