ELWOOD, Ind. — A Muncie man died when he was pinned between a semitrailer and a train near a Red Gold tomato processing plant.

Jeff York, 35, died from internal injuries to his abdomen and chest, Madison County Coroner Marian Dunnichay said.

Shortly before 5 a.m., a truck driver had made a delivery of vinegar to Red Gold in a semitrailer truck, sheriff’s Patrolman John Henderson said.

The driver was leaving the facility in his truck and began crossing the railroad tracks behind a train, but was unaware that the train was backing up, Henderson said.

York, an employee with Norfolk Southern Railroad, was standing on a ladder in the back of the train’s last boxcar. As the train backed up, the front fender of the semi struck the train, pinning York between the truck and train in the town about 30 miles north of Indianapolis.

York was taken to Mercy Hospital in Elwood for treatment, but was pronounced dead at the hospital shortly after.

No charges were immediately filed against the truck driver, Henderson said, but the accident was still under investigation.
