DANBURY, Conn. — A Metro-North visual inspection failed to spot a badly joined rail two days before a derailment in Bridgeport last year because inspectors were on a different track and not close enough to spot the defect, according to a finding released by the National Transportation Safety Board on Monday.
In response, the NTSB is calling on Metro-North and other commuter railroads to visually inspect every track at least twice a month and eliminate an exemption allowing commuter railroads to delay inspections of individual tracks when it interrupts train schedules.
