BOSTON — Federal investigators have formally concluded a text-messaging Boston subway train driver was the probable cause of a crash that injured 65 riders and caused nearly $10 million in damage.

The National Transportation Safety Board also found trolley driver Aiden Quinn tried to call his girlfriend moments before the 2009 accident and left a phone message.

When Quinn tried to send a text message asking his girlfriend to call him, he ran through yellow and red lights.

Investigators said Thursday the texting caused Quinn to “lose his situational awareness and his focus on operating the train.”
