ABINGDON, Va. — Melissa Watson pointed to a 1956 photo of a bus seemingly racing a locomotive in Damascus, Va.

“It’s like technology of 50 years ago or more,” said Watson, the office manager of the Historical Society of Washington County in Abingdon.

The late O. Winston Link, a New York photographer, shot that photo of Train 201. In the late 1950s, Link became fascinated with capturing the waning era of steam trains of what was once called the Virginia-Carolina Railway, now the Virginia Creeper Trail.

The photo is one of about 40 black-and-white images of Link’s that belong to the William King Museum. They are currently showcased on the walls of the century-old Abingdon depot housing the historical society library.
