SPRING VALLEY, N.Y. — The Associated Press reports that an illegal railroad crossing in Rockland County where 10 people have died since the mid-1980s will be fenced off by the end of winter, Sen. Charles Schumer said Thursday.

NJ Transit will erect an 8-foot, tamper-resistant fence along three-quarters of a mile of its Pascack Valley line tracks in Spring Valley, the senator said at a news conference near the tracks with George Warrington, the railroad’s executive director.

Several of those killed have been immigrant laborers walking to Route 59 for rides or work offers, and the railroad will also publish warning signs and brochures in English, Spanish and Creole, Schumer said.

“It’s taken some time, but NJ Transit has come through with a plan that will spread the word about the dangers of trying to cross these tracks,” Schumer said. “Hopefully, this will prevent future tragedies.”
