FORT WAYNE, Ind. — A 31-car train derailment just west of Bryan, Ohio, prompted the evacuation of nearby residents Monday, according to Williams County sheriff’s deputies.
The derailment of a Norfolk Southern train was reported just before 9:30 a.m. Monday just east of County Road 8, deputies said.
Edgerton firefighters arrived and handled the evacuation.
It was unclear how many residents were affected. Evacuated areas were near county roads C and 9, but not near city limits.
Some cars were carrying ethanol, which spilled, according to Rudy Husband, a spokesman for Norfolk Southern. It was unclear how much of the fuel had spilled, he said.
The cause of the derailment was unknown Monday. Husband said cleanup efforts were expected to last through today. No major thoroughfares were affected by the derailment.
