OCEAN CITY, N.J. — The Eastern shore is getting a piece of New York City Friday morning.

The Maryland Artificial Reef Initiative is beginning to drop old subway cars into the Atlantic off the coast of Ocean City.

The move is part of an effort to create a new artificial reef.

More than 40 cars will be dumped into the ocean, in hopes of creating a new environment for marine life to thrive. Once completed, up to 600 cars could line the ocean floor.

The spot is expected to become popular diving and fishing destination.
