SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — A rail worker is dead after a freight train derailment in Springfield this morning.

Authorities say seven rail cars went off the tracks at about one o’clock (near an overpass on Sangamon Avenue).

Police say one person was killed, but no details are being released.

The derailment spilled grain from the rail cars. And two were left hanging over the edge of the overpass, forcing authorities to close the lanes below to traffic.

Springfield Police and the Union Pacific Railroad are trying to determine what caused the derailment.
