As the Federal government shutdown that began on October 1 continues, it is beginning to affect government agencies that serve the rail industry and BLET members. The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have been forced to postpone key events that were geared toward improving rail safety.

The FRA postponed a safety culture assessment at the Union Pacific Railroad as well as its western regional meeting scheduled for this fall. The meeting typically provides BLET representatives with opportunities to engage with FRA leadership and other industry stakeholders regarding important safety initiatives.

Also, the NTSB was forced to postpone its highly-anticipated Rail Worker Safety Summit due to the government shutdown. When (or if) it is rescheduled, the in-person summit will examine current safety risks for freight and passenger rail workers as well as risk mitigation strategies.

No progress has been made between Republicans and Democrats toward a deal to reopen the Federal government and the shutdown could continue for a while longer.

“It is incumbent upon us to let our members know how and when a government shutdown may affect BLET’s efforts to interact with the U.S. Congress and federal agencies,” said BLET Vice President and National Legislative Representative Vince Verna. “Your BLET Washington D.C. representatives continue to work with essential agencies and congressional staff that remain in D.C. on issues important to our members.”
