(Operation Lifesaver issued the following news release on December 19.)

NEW YORK — Genesys Broadcasting Corporation is pleased to announce Operation Lifesaver, a national non-profit public safety education group, is launching with Genesys today a two week advertising campaign on the JumboTron in Times Square, New York City.

This campaign is designed to increase pedestrian safety along tracks and railroad rights-of-way. Last year, more than 880 pedestrians were killed or injured in the U.S. while trespassing on railroad tracks or property.

Operation Lifesaver’s 30-second, non-profit public service announcement (PSA) named “Commuter,” will appear on the giant 585 square-foot JumboTron nine times each day from December 19th 2005 to January 1st 2006, which coincides when the infamous ‘New Years Eve Ball’ makes its fall to usher in 2006.

In this Telly award-winning spot, a twenty-something blond woman is on a cell phone in her car in the station’s lot, explaining how she “almost died.” She hopped off the train in the rain placing a newspaper over her head. She then decided to cross over the tracks rather than taking an overpass-to save time. Moments before she stepped into the path of the second train, a man pulled her back to safety. This spot was shot with just a single stationary train, but footage of an earlier-running New Jersey Transit train was added during editing. The “Commuter” spot was shot between midnight and 4 am on the New Jersey Transit line at the Glen Ridge train station in 2002.

More than 20 million people in New York and Times Square are expected to see these larger than life images on this giant video JumboTron.

“We are proud to work with Operation Lifesaver on this first New York public display of the “Commuter,” said Linda Han, Chief Operating Officer of Genesys Broadcasting Corporation. “It is important that we advance the message on pedestrian safety, especially during this holiday season.”

Gerri Hall, President, Operation Lifesaver, also expressed her organization’s delight in bringing “Commuter” to the forefront of America’s entertainment and advertising center. “We are excited to have this opportunity to share our award-winning spot as we carry our safety message to America.”
