ALBANY, N.Y. — The unprecedented boom in crude oil transport by rail throughout the United States, and through the Port of Albany in particular, has heightened fears that derailments and accidental releases could jeopardize public safety and cause environmental harm. Those concerns are real, given the tragedy at Lac Megantic in July 2013, and subsequent accidents which released thousands of gallons of crude oil to the environment.
