Our nation’s Legislature is utterly paralyzed, deadlocked over issues big and small as the United States tumbles closer to a dangerous fiscal cliff. In the meantime, many members of Congress have blithely signed pledges that they would not — under any circumstances – vote for a compromise that involved raising taxes or otherwise rankle power brokers within their parties.
It’s time for American citizens to demand a new pledge from all members of Congress: No matter which candidate is elected president, all members of Congress — regardless of party affiliation — should be required to promise that they’ll work in good faith with the chief executive for the good of the county, rather than squandering the country’s future to feather their own political nests.
If they refuse to take that pledge, they should be sent packing immediately.
