(Chicago television station NBC5 posted the following article on its website on November 7.)
CHICAGO — Nobody was injured in an overnight train derailment, but 30,000 to 40,000 Metra rail commuters experienced delays as long as one hour for the beginning of Friday morning’s commute. By 7 a.m., Metra spokesman Dan Shnolis said delays had been reduced to 15 minutes.
Another Metra spokesman, Judy Pardonnet, said a Milwaukee North line train derailed at about 2 a.m. Friday, near Western and Grand Avenues. The train was headed for Fox Lake.
Pardonnet said about 30 passengers were on the outbound train at the time.
Delays will affect commuters on the Milwaukee West, Milwaukee North, the North Central, and Union Pacific lines, Pardonnet said.
Passengers who were on the train when it derailed were placed on Chicago Transit Authority routes that connected with suburban transit systems.
