BOSTON — At $500,000, it was touted as the largest corporate criminal fine in Massachusetts state history. An appeals court upheld the ruling this week against Pan Am Railways and its subsidiaries, Springfield Terminal Railway, Boston & Maine Corp. and Maine Central Railroad. Each unit was fined $125,000 for its share of a 2006 diesel fuel spill in Ayer, Mass. They were found guilty of not reporting the spill in a timely fashion and also for attempting to cover up the spill.
