PANAMA CITY, Panama — Two trains collided on a scenic route along the Panama Canal, killing the engineer of one train and slightly injuring 10 American tourists, a wire service reported.

The passengers injured in Sunday’s accident, who took the train as part of a cruise vacation, were treated at a hospital in Panama City for cuts and bruises and released the same day.

The train they were riding in crashed into another train waiting to change rails at a crossover in the city of Gamboa, 25 miles northwest of Panama City.

Thomas Kenna, spokesman for the U.S.-based Kansas City Southern Rail Network, which operates the Panama Railway Company, said the cause of the crash was under investigation.

The train was headed toward the Atlantic coast city of Colon, along a route that takes it through jungles that border the waterway.
