ALEXANDRIA, Ind. — Part of a street near downtown Alexandria that was damaged in a weekend train derailment will be closed at least until Tuesday.

Seven cars, including four tankers, of the 85-car train left the tracks about 7 p.m. Saturday.

A 200-foot section of Washington Street was closed after the train cars “ground up the road,” said Steve Beltz of the Alexandria Fire Department.

The train’s contents, mostly grain and cargo boxes, were not hazardous.

By Sunday, all but one of the cars had been removed from the area, Beltz said.

A spokesman for Norfolk Southern Corp. said the train was traveling to Chicago from Macon, Ga.
