PHILADELPHIA — Officials in Philadelphia plan a payroll audit of all Amtrak employees assigned to the 30th Street Station office after finding two employees who have not been paying the city’s wage tax.
City Controller Alan Butkovitz says the two employees live outside the city but have not paid city worker wage taxes totaling about $9,000 for the last two years. He says the two had claimed an exemption to which they were not entitled.
Butkovitz says Amtrak has not cooperated with efforts to determine how many Amtrak employees are dodging taxes. He says a preliminary analysis indicates a substantial number may be falsely claiming a wage tax exemption.
An Amtrak spokeswoman said she was not aware of Butkovitz’ plans and could not immediately comment Wednesday afternoon.
