PIERRE, S.D. — Pierre Mayor Dennis Eisnach has initiated talks with the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe on building part of a railroad bypass across tribal land, the Associated Press reported.
The cities of Pierre and Fort Pierre want a bypass if the Dakota, Minnesota & Eastern Railroad moves ahead with its expanded rail project.
City officials are suggesting a route that would cross the Missouri River and go across tribal land before crossing the river again.
Eisnach has met once with tribal officials and expects additional meetings in the coming weeks.
A bypass could cost about $100 million.
