DOVER, Del. — Authorities said today that criminal mischief or a simple mishap may be to blame in a weekend rail accident.
Two cars of a Norfolk Southern Corp. freight train derailed shortly before 7 p.m. Sunday, between Kesselring Avenue and Beechwood Drive in Dover.
Dover police spokesman Capt. Leser Boney said they hit several pieces of steel on the tracks, causing $26,000 damage.
Railroad officials said the steel commonly is used to brace train loads and may have fallen from a previous train.
But a witness told city police three boys, ages 10-12 were playing on the tracks earlier.
Police ask anyone who knows the kids’ identity to call (302) 736-7138 or 736-7111.
