NEWARK, N.J. — Commuters taking NJ Transit on their way home Friday night may notice hundreds of extra police officers at 50 train stations in North Jersey.
The New Jersey Office of Homeland Security and Preparedness, NJ Transit and other police agencies will be participating in a drill that simulates an attack on the state’s transportation system.
More than 1,000 officers representing about 135 agencies and six counties will participate, said Roger Shatzkin, a spokesman for the Office of Homeland Security.
The drill is the culmination of four months of exercises within the Urban Area Security Initiative region, which on a simulated a terrorist attack at a North Jersey rail station. The region includes Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Morris, Passaic and Union counties and the cities of Newark and Jersey City.
The drill will take place from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. and train service will not be disrupted, officials said.
