EDISON, N.J. — An electrical outage at the start of Wednesday afternoon’s rush hour delayed Amtrak and NJ Transit trains along the nation’s busiest passenger rail corridor.

Three of the four tracks on the Northeast Corridor, owned and operated by Amtrak, lost power at 4:04 p.m. in the overhead lines near Edison that power the locomotives, Amtrak spokesman Dan Stessel said.

The cause was not known. By 5:20 p.m., most electric power had been restored and train service was largely back to normal, Stessel said. But delays of 15 to 30 minutes were expected for the remainder of rush hour.

NJ Transit trains, which also run on the Northeast Corridor rails, were back to a normal schedule by 8 p.m., with all trains in service, said spokeswoman Penny Bassett Hackett.

The Northeast Corridor runs from Boston to Washington.
