NELLYSFORD, Va. — As a project to restore and reopen the Blue Ridge Tunnel — a 4,264-foot-long railroad passage between Afton and Waynesboro — gains steam, author Mary Lyons hopes people will remember the efforts of about 3,000 Irish and slave laborers who spent nearly 10 years blasting the tunnel out of the greenstone base of Afton Mountain.
