DES MOINES, Iowa — Upgrading Iowa’s passenger railroad system with more than $100 million in state and federal money will have a big payoff for freight railroads and will bolster Iowa’s economy, rail advocates said Monday. Jeff Kurtz, Iowa State Legislative Board Chairman of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen, spoke at an Iowa Statehouse news conference Monday in support of state and federal aid to upgrade passenger railroad service in Iowa. He said freight railroads will be benefit, which will improve the state’s economy.
