RIVERDALE, Ill. — A hazardous materials team spent much of Tuesday in a rail yard in Riverdale containing a hydrochloric acid spill from a rail car.

One worker was overcome by fumes from the leak and treated at the scene, but no other injuries were reported and no residents or nearby businesses were evacuated, Riverdale Fire Department Lt. Kevin Flick said.

The leak, involving a CSX rail car near 136th and Halsted Streets, occurred shortly before 4 a.m. Because the yard is in a predominantly industrial area and away from local roadways, traffic was not affected, Flick said.

Firefighters and railroad workers moved the leaking car to a secure location within the yard and transferred the contents into another rail car, Flick said.

The cause of the leak was not immediately known, he said.
