SAN ANTONIO, Texas — Federal officials Tuesday gave the Union Pacific railroad a year to correct problems that have led to six derailments in the San Antonio area.
The Federal Railroad Commission and San Antonio officials agreed to a Safety Compliance Agreement during a Washington meeting, WOAI-AM, San Antonio, reported.
There have been six derailments in the San Antonio area since June, including four fatalities.
Mayor Ed Garza said he was pleased with the deal, but he wants to see if the railroad lives up to the agreement.
In a key provision, the railroad has agreed to triple safety inspectors assigned to Bexar County. There are currently five inspectors working out of San Antonio.
The commission said last week that UP employees were not following the safety guidelines imposed by the company.
The federal officials promised to vigorously enforce the provisions of the agreement signed Tuesday.
