WASHINGTON — At certain locations, rail operators will be required to remove trash bins, except clear plastic or bomb-resistant trash containers. And when needed, canine explosive teams may be used to screen passenger baggage, terminals and trains.

That’s all part of new rail security rules that took effect Sunday and were issued by the Department of Homeland Security.

The changes also include asking rail passengers and employees to report unattended items or suspicious behavior.

The rules affect light rail systems, intercity passenger rail systems such as Amtrak, commuter rail operations such as the Maryland Rail Commuter and Long Island Railroad, as well as subway systems nationwide.
