MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa — Trains are rolling across Iowa again after a derailment in central Iowa closed rail traffic on the Union Pacific route.
Union Pacific spokesman Mark Davis says 13 rail cars jumped the tracks Saturday afternoon, closing the busy route through Marshall County. The tracks were reopened yesterday (Sunday) morning.
Davis says the cars were part of a train that originated in Portland, Oregon. It was headed toward Chicago.
Davis says the cars were carrying mixed freight, but that none of the freight was hazardous.
He says crews had to replace about 320 feet of track before it could reopen.
The line carries as many as 70 trains a day.
The cause of the derailment and a damage estimate were not available.
