TORRANCE, Calif. — A railroad employee slipped under a train and was killed Wednesday as he worked on Terminal Island, authorities said.

The accident occurred about 5:30 p.m. on a Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad line in the 900 block of South Navy Way, near the Hanshin and Mersk terminals.

Los Angeles police Capt. Patrick Gannon said an employee working on shifting trains on tracks fell under the train and was run over. His leg was severed and he died at the scene.

Port of Los Angeles police took over the investigation. Cal-OSHA investigators, who investigate industrial accidents, also were expected at the scene.

The identity of the worker was not immediately available, and it was unclear if he was a BNSF employee.
