CHICAGO — The morning of a fatal train derailment July 4, a Union Pacific employee responsible for maintenance on the railroad’s signal system called a track inspector to check out something that didn’t look right on the stretch of track spanning Shermer Road on the Glenview-Northbrook border, railroad officials told residents of both communities Monday night. But that inspector didn’t arrive before 28 rail cars carrying coal derailed, the officials said. The derailment caused a bridge to collapse and led to the death of a Glenview couple.
