BOCA RATON, Fla. — RailAmerica Inc.?s October consolidated freight carloads rose 1.9% to 130,356 from 127,886 a year earlier.

In a press release Monday, the short line and regional railroad operator said its North American carloads rose 2.3% in October to 103,047 from 100,723 a year earlier.

On a same-railroad basis, North American carloads fell 0.5% as double-digit increases in loads of metallic/non-metallic ores, petroleum products and metals were partially offset by lower auto, intermodal and bridge traffic.

Internationally, carloads rose 0.5% as a 15.4% rise in traffic in Chile helped offset an 8.7% decline in Australia, where shipments continued to be hurt by a drought.

In the 10 months of the year to date, RailAmerica’s total carloads totaled 1.2 million, down 0.7% from the same period a year earlier.
