JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Short line freight railroad RailAmerica Inc. said Tuesday that shipments last month rose 11.8 percent over June 2009.

The company said shipments increased in nine out of 12 commodity categories, led by gains in shipments of metals and ores, coal and chemicals.

Shipments of forest products fell due to lighter loads in the Northeast, Southeast and West.

RailAmerica operates 40 regional freight railroads in North America covering about 7,400 miles of track in 27 states and three Canadian provinces.

Its shares rose 31 cents, or 3.1 percent, to close at $10.33.
