SAN GABRIEL, Calif. — A slew of local, state and federal officials gathered Thursday in San Gabriel to mark the beginning of a massive trench project that will lower a section of the Union Pacific Railroad track through the city.

The $336.5 million project will separate trains from vehicles, eliminating the traffic. It’s also expected to create more than 8,900 jobs over its five-year construction period.
