RATON, N.M. — New Mexico investigators said Saturday that engine exhaust particles coming from an all-terrain vehicle caused the massive Track Fire that so far has burned eight homes and scorched about 27,792 acres of land in two states.

Investigators from the New Mexico State Forestry and the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway said an ATV rider trespassed onto land owned by BNSF Railway through access from nearby private property.
