WASHINGTON, D.C. — Freight railroads were assessing the damage Monday from this weekend’s severe hit from Hurricane Ike on the Texas coast.
BNSF Railway and Union Pacific Railroad both said they hoped to resume operations early this week. Both had teams out across the region’s rail network to examine whether the flooding and debris the hurricane left behind caused significant damage to tracks and facilities.
BNSF officials said some of the railroad’s facilities near Galveston, where Ike came ashore on Saturday, and Houston were without power.
UP said it was bringing in generators to restore power to lines outside Houston.
