RALEIGH, N.C. — At their fourth quarter 2002 meeting, the Railway Association of North Carolina (RANC) hired Barbara Holmes Marcum as Executive Director of the Association. Ms. Marcum is based in Raleigh and represents the association at meetings of the North Carolina Board of Transportation and Rail Advisory Task Force, as well as meeting with companies who are vendors and suppliers of the railroad industry and join the association as associate members. Ms. Marcum has worked with the railroad industry as a consultant since 1989.

The association also elected a new Executive Board at the 4th quarter meeting. Robert Menzies, President of the Aberdeen Carolina and Western Railway, was elected President; Scott Saylor, President of the North Carolina Railroad Company, was elected Vice President; and Ben Zachary, President of the Alexander Railroad, was re-elected Secretary Treasurer. Lyman Cooper, Regional Vice President of CSX Corporation, stepped down as President of the Board after 12 years of service.

The Railway Association of North Carolina consists of 23 railroads whose operations cover North Carolina from the coast to the mountains in every county. These railroads operate almost 3,400 miles of track, employ approximately 3,200 North Carolina citizens, and serve more than 1,300 industries statewide. The association is an integral part of North Carolina’s transportation system. Railroads in the state comprise a key part of infrastructure for economic development.
