NEWARK, N.J. — NJ Transit is taking advantage of low ridership again during the coronavirus pandemic to make progress on a looming federal deadline to complete a safety project by the end of the year by redeploying dozens of commuter trains. But federal officials cast doubt on NJ Transit meeting the deadline, warning them on Wednesday it is one of two commuter railroads in the nation in danger of not making a Dec. 31 mandatory deadline to implement Positive Train Control.
