LINCOLN, Neb. — Traffic in west Lincoln backed up for hours Friday because of a railcar spill.
The spill occurred at the U.S. Highway 77 overpass just south of Interstate 80. The overpass sits above the Burlington Northern Santa Fe rail yard, where a railcar carrying rubbing alcohol was punctured while being moved.
Fire, rescue and local hazardous materials teams headed to the scene about 7:30 a.m.
BNSF spokesman Steve Forsberg said 7,000 to 8,000 gallons of rubbing alcohol leaked out. Closing the overpass was a precaution, he said.
